Everything you need to know about domains
What is a domain?
The domain is considered one of the first steps you need when creating your website, but you might be wondering what it is. The domain is also known as the "domain name" and it acts as the address or phone number through which people can access your website. However, this name still doesn't explain what a domain is.
The definition of a domain is the address that is typed into the browser's address bar to access the website you want to visit, such as Google, which is typed in the form of www.google.com. Each website has a unique and distinctive fingerprint, but how does the domain work?
How does the domain work?
One of the simplest examples of a domain is when you type in google.com. Do you think there is a possibility that you will end up on Facebook or Yahoo or any other website? Of course not, because the domain is linked to the server that belongs to the Google website and thus it will direct you to this name directly. So how does the domain work? The domain works like a computer in that each device is identified by a set of numbers known as an IP address. Therefore, any website on the Internet operates with a fixed number and domain names cannot be the same as another website's domain. The domain is made up of a set of letters that represent the name of a company or trademark, which is then called the domain name. So how do I buy a domain?
How to buy a domain?
When you want to buy a domain, you go to a web hosting company to reserve space on the server to be able to host your website on it. Some hosting companies will provide you with DNS, which you can use to link the domain to the server. These companies update the database after each purchase so that each person has a domain name and a unique number. When you own a domain name, all the information related to the domain name is available in a database known as WHOIS, through which you can identify any information related to the name.
What is a domain extension?
A domain extension is the last part of a website's name, for example, we find Google's address in this form google.com, and after the last dot is what is known as the extension. There are many extensions such as .com, .net, and .org. When we think of extensions, the first thing that comes to mind is .com, but there are actually many other extensions available for use. Choosing a domain extension is a personal preference and what is best for your website.
• The first extension, .com, is a top-level domain and widely used. 40% of registered domains are .com because it is easier for people to type than any other domain.
• The second extension, .net, is considered the second and best alternative to .com but is used by websites and companies that offer internet and network services.
• The third extension, .edu, is one of the extensions designated for educational institutions, universities, and schools. This extension is also associated with many educational centers in some Arab and European countries. The domain with this extension can be registered if the criteria are met by those who want to obtain it. This extension is highly restricted, and its policies are somewhat strict to promote the educational system and protect students.
• The fourth extension, .org, is an abbreviation for the word "Organization" and is used by non-profit organizations or institutions. Some well-known companies, schools, and associations also use it.
• The fifth extension, .gov, can be used by government agencies, ministries, and some other government organizations. This is a domain managed by the General Services Administration (GSA), an independent agency based in the United States.
